5 cups water
12 cups water
1 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon ground cumin
8 cloves garlic, chopped fine
2 teaspoon black pepper
2 teaspoon salt
2 small onions, chopped
1 1/2 cup red or brown lentils
4 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar
cooked brown rice
Boil 5 cups of water in a large pot. Add turmeric, garlic, salt and pepper, onion and lentils. Cook on medium-low heat until lentils are cooked through and most of the water has evaporated, about 30 minutes.
Mash the lentils into a paste with a potato masher, using a little water if necessary. Pour in about 12 cups of water and bring to a boil. Turn the heat down to medium-low and simmer for 15 minutes. Add lemon juice and salt to taste. Stir cooked white rice into the soup at the end to make it very thick.
